On October 16, 2023, a reporter from China News Service spoke with officials at Wuyi Mountain Airport about an upcoming temporary shutdown. Starting November 1, 2024, the airport will suspend all flight operations due to necessary runway repairs.
Wuyi Mountain Airport, which opened in 1958, has been a vital transport hub since it commenced civil aviation in 1994. The runway, having been in service for nearly 29 years, is approaching its maximum lifespan and is showing considerable wear that poses safety concerns. Thus, refurbishment work has become essential.
This year, with the support of the Nanping Municipal Government’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the aviation market, Wuyi Mountain Airport has been actively working to restore existing flights and expand new routes. In collaboration with the Nanping Aviation Office, the airport has launched promotional activities focusing on air travel and cultural tourism initiatives. Since February, the airport has reinstated the Qingdao-Wuyi Mountain-Guangzhou route, increased flights between Wuyi Mountain and Beijing Daxing operated by Xiamen Airlines, and opened new routes including Jinan-Wuyi Mountain-Shenzhen. Currently, the airport operates eight regular routes with an average of 12 flights daily. As of October 15, 2023, Wuyi Mountain Airport has successfully handled 2,674 flights, marking a 36.15% increase, and served 257,100 passengers, a rise of 51.12%.
During the planned shutdown starting November 1, renovations will take place at the airport, enhancing safety facilities, upgrading the passenger terminal, and modernizing key equipment. Officials assure that once construction is completed, they will promptly announce the resumption of flight services. These upgrades aim to improve safety, service quality, and operational efficiency, laying a solid foundation for the airport’s future growth and service enhancements.
