Woman arrested following care home deaths

In a shocking incident at the Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage, Dorset, emergency services were called in the early hours of Wednesday following the deaths of three residents. Authorities have arrested a 60-year-old woman on suspicion of manslaughter as part of their investigation into what they are treating as “unexplained” deaths, with potential carbon monoxide poisoning identified as the primary line of inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third stated, “As part of our investigation, we have made one arrest to determine whether there were any grossly negligent actions or omissions. It’s crucial for us to gather as much information as possible about what transpired.” He also urged the media and public to refrain from speculation, emphasizing that the arrest provides legal protections for individuals involved now that legal proceedings are active.

Emergency services responded to the care home on Ulwell Road around 5:20 AM BST. Seven individuals were taken to local hospitals, and the remaining residents were evacuated to a nearby church hall. The Dorset Police confirmed that the families of the deceased have been informed and that the coroner has been notified.

Throughout Wednesday, emergency teams continued to investigate the scene, with approximately 40 residents being transferred to All Saints Church for safety, some of whom required wheelchairs. In collaboration with various agencies, Dorset Council is working to support residents, many of whom have significant care needs. A council spokesperson stated, “We are committed to understanding how best to assist them in the short term and identifying their next steps.”

Agincare, the organization that runs the home, has taken measures to bolster staffing resources to support residents during this challenging time. They have relocated residents and assured that those moved to a local village hall and church are “safe and well.” The company expressed their concern for the affected individuals and their families, promising to keep them updated while coordinating with local authorities to facilitate the residents’ return home as soon as possible.

Emergency response included a specialized hazardous area response team from the South West Ambulance NHS Trust and multiple fire crews from around Dorset, with additional support from engineers at gas distribution company SGN, who conducted safety checks at the facility.

As this situation develops, our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragic event.
