On October 15th, the Chinese government announced the latest developments in the corruption case involving Dou Wangui, a former member and vice-chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s Political Consultative Conference. The Supreme People’s Procuratorate has made the decision to formally arrest Dou on charges of bribery, and the investigation is ongoing.
Dou Wangui, born in October 1962 in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, has spent a significant part of his career working in Xinjiang. He was appointed as the vice-chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s Political Consultative Conference in January 2018.
On March 20th of this year, reports surfaced about Dou being investigated during his tenure. By October 7th, he was officially expelled from the Communist Party and removed from his public office. Allegations against him include exploiting his official position for personal gain in areas such as mineral resource development, project contracting, and personnel selections. He is also accused of illegally accepting substantial sums of money and engaging in practices that undermine key decisions made by the central government, as well as colluding with political opportunists and participating in corruption.
