On October 18th, the Beijing release event for the new book titled *Zongka’s Great Compassionate Hongjue Temple—A Millennia-Old Monastery on the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road* was held, organized by the Research Business Office of the China Tibetology Research Center and published by the China Tibetology Press.
The book, authored by Garwa Awang Sangbo, the abbot of Hongjue Temple in Xining, Qinghai Province, narrates the history of the temple, highlighting its historical significance throughout various periods while delving into the rich traditions of patriotism and love for Buddhism within Tibetan Buddhism.
At the release event, Wang Weiqiang, the chief editor of the China Tibetology Press, addressed attendees, noting that Hongjue Temple serves as a testament to the remarkable history of interaction and integration among different ethnic groups while exemplifying the honorable traditions of patriotism and love for the faith in Tibetan Buddhism. He emphasized that the publication of this book will provide valuable resources for researchers and enhance the public’s understanding and recognition of the diverse yet unified nature of the Chinese nation.
Hongjue Temple, located in the urban area of Xining, boasts a history of more than 1,000 years as a Gelug school temple of Tibetan Buddhism. Abbot Garwa Awang Sangbo shared insights regarding the background and significance of the book’s creation, expressing hopes that it would play an active role in promoting national unity and reinforcing a sense of community among the Chinese people.
Professor Wan Guo from Southwest Minzu University highlighted the academic value of the book, stating that it breaks away from the traditional characteristic of historical writing in Tibetan culture. He noted the incorporation of contemporary ethnographic research methods, focusing on historical verification and factual narration, which contributes significant documentary and scholarly references.
Zhalo, Deputy Executive Director of the China Tibetology Research Center, remarked that Hongjue Temple records the splendid history of cultural exchanges between Han and Tibetan cultures and stands as a witness to the glorious history of unity among different ethnic groups. He stated that the new book not only systematically outlines the development history of Hongjue Temple but also vividly presents the historical facts of interconnections between Tibetan Buddhism, Han Buddhism, and various ethnic groups within China.
It is noteworthy that *Zongka’s Great Compassionate Hongjue Temple—A Millennia-Old Monastery on the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road* is a significant achievement stemming from the National Social Science Fund project titled “Research on the ‘Belt and Road’ and the Development of Tibetan Buddhism,” with publication scheduled for August 2024 by China Tibetology Press.
