In an exclusive interview with Chuks Okocha in Abuja, we explore the ongoing power struggle within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sources indicate that the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Illiya Damagum, is under increasing pressure to take disciplinary action against certain members who are seen as opposing Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State and the current Federal Capital Territory Minister.
The situation has become quite polarized, with reports suggesting that the NWC is split between Wike loyalists and those advocating for strict adherence to the party’s constitution. An emergency meeting has been convened by the Damagum-led NWC to discuss the potential suspension of members who are accused of insisting on following party regulations, particularly those related to the Rivers State PDP Congresses.
An insider revealed that a prominent politician is allegedly exerting influence on NWC members to secure these suspensions, which might pave the way for a complete takeover of the party’s operations. While the specific names of those targeted for suspension remain undisclosed, the source highlighted the uncertainty surrounding whether these individuals would accept such drastic actions.
Interestingly, it was pointed out that no explicit charges have been presented against the members in question, other than their perceived alignment with the faction opposing Wike. There are growing concerns that this potential suspension could trigger a major crisis within the party.
Further insights suggest that the activities of those identified for suspension have thwarted multiple attempts by a particular faction to weaken the party and seize total control in preparation for the critical 2027 general election. The battle for the future of the PDP has now shifted its focus to controlling the structures within Rivers State. In August, Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu even reached out to the Appeal Court, stating that the PDP intends to continue appealing the contentious decision regarding 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, despite the party’s established legal position.
