A man has tragically lost his life following a train collision in Wales, as confirmed by the British Transport Police (BTP). In addition to the fatality, 15 others were injured and required hospitalization, although their injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-altering.
According to Transport for Wales’ Chief Operating Officer, the deceased was a passenger on the train traveling from Shrewsbury. The incident involved two trains: one was headed from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth, and the other was making its way from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. The collision occurred near the village of Llanbrynmair, Powys, around 7:30 PM BST on Monday.
Witnessing the aftermath, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service dispatched teams from Newtown and Machynlleth fire stations, arriving at the scene just moments after the crash. They worked alongside other emergency services and remained on-site until approximately 11:11 PM BST.
The Welsh Ambulance Service reported that they transported seven patients to the hospital, while Dyfed Powys Police confirmed a total of 15 individuals sought medical attention for their injuries.
Anthony Hurford, a passenger on the Aberystwyth-bound train, shared his experience of the crash, stating he felt “pretty shellshocked.” He described the moment of impact: “The word that keeps coming to my head is just brutal, really. Just going from, I don’t know how fast we were going, maybe 40, 50, 60 miles an hour, to nothing in the blink of an eye. Somehow, my body bent the leg of a table and ripped it off its bolts attached to the wall.”
