Gauff wins first women’s singles championship- Beijing’s Forbidden City brings me good luck

On October 6th, 2024, Coco Gauff celebrated her victory at the China Open by showcasing her trophy during the award ceremony. The event, held at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, marked the conclusion of the prestigious tournament. In just 76 minutes, the former U.S. Open champion triumphed over Karolina Muchova, the former French Open runner-up, with a decisive score of 6-1, 6-3, clinching her first title at the China Open.

Previously, Gauff and Muchova had faced each other twice, both times resulting in victories for Gauff in straight sets during the Cincinnati WTA finals and the U.S. Open semifinals last year. In this final match, Gauff displayed an impressive performance, demonstrating her exceptional serving and forehand skills. She broke serve and held her own in the opening game, followed by another break of serve in the sixth game, ultimately capturing the first set 6-1 with ease.

In the second set, Muchova initially broke Gauff’s serve, but Gauff quickly responded with a break of her own. She then secured breaks in the fifth and ninth games, concluding the match with a 6-3 victory to claim the singles title.

At just 20 years old, this victory marks Gauff’s eighth title in her professional career, ending a nine-month title drought that began after the WTA 250 event in Auckland this past January.

Prior to the tournament, Gauff and Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz donned traditional Chinese attire while visiting the Forbidden City in Beijing. Both players went on to win their respective singles titles. After the final match, Gauff humorously remarked in an interview, “Thanks to the Forbidden City for bringing me good luck!”
