Boy, 16, charged with attempted murder of Army chaplain

A teenage boy is currently facing attempted murder charges in the Republic of Ireland following a serious incident involving an army chaplain. On August 15, Fr. Paul F. Murphy was reportedly stabbed multiple times at Renmore Barracks in County Galway. The 16-year-old suspect, whose identity is protected due to his age, previously faced charges related to assault causing harm.

During a brief appearance at Galway District Court on Wednesday morning, the boy remained silent as the upgraded charges were presented to him. It was reported that both his father and solicitor were present at the hearing. According to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, the court was informed that the director of public prosecutions has instructed that the case be advanced to the Central Criminal Court for indictment.

Judge Fahy explained that bail applications cannot be processed at the District Court level. As a result, the accused has been remanded to Oberstown Detention Centre and is scheduled to appear via video link at the Galway District Court again next week.
