Tinubu Mourns Humphrey Nwosu, Says He Was a Bold, Courageous Administrator

In a heartfelt statement, President Bola Tinubu extended his condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who passed away in a United States hospital on October 24.

Prof. Nwosu, who led the NEC from 1989 to 1993, is best remembered for overseeing the pivotal June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was controversially annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida. Prior to this significant event, he introduced the innovative and cost-effective OPTION A-4 system for the governorship and parliamentary elections, allowing voters to express their choices by queuing behind the photographs of their preferred candidates at polling stations.

In a release issued on Friday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu reflected on Nwosu’s legacy as a brave and principled leader. He expressed profound sorrow over the loss of a true patriot and national asset, whose contributions were instrumental in shaping the democratic landscape of Nigeria today.

The President stated that honoring champions of democracy like Nwosu entails ensuring that elections in Nigeria remain credible, transparent, and democratic—truly reflecting the people’s right to select their leaders and determine their future. He also offered prayers for the eternal rest of the departed political scientist and for divine comfort for all those mourning his passing.
