Scandal-ridden Adams attends Columbus Day parade as usual

In an exclusive interview, we caught up with New York City Mayor Eric Adams as he participated in the 80th annual Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan despite recent controversies and a looming federal indictment. When asked about the resignation of his Asian American advisor, Zheng Qirong, and her alleged connections with Chinese authorities, Adams firmly maintained that he is uninvolved with Chinese politics and pointed to the city’s flourishing Asian community as a vital part of New York’s rich cultural tapestry. “I respect the diversity of this city,” he stated.

This year’s parade featured notable figures, including Governor Kathy Hochul and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, alongside Congressman Tom Suozzi, who marched at the forefront.

Despite the controversies surrounding his administration, Adams remained steadfast, proudly walking with the NYPD in the parade. According to the New York Post, when questioned about Zheng’s close ties with Chinese government officials, Adams emphasized that New York hosts a significant Chinese population, which naturally leads to varying beliefs and understandings. He expressed a level of tolerance regarding China’s one-party political system. “I have nothing to do with their politics, but I respect the diversity of this city,” he affirmed.

Earlier this month, Zheng resigned after working alongside Adams since 2014. Reports highlighted her deep connections with the Communist Party of China, suggesting she had influenced Adams’ administration regarding diplomatic engagement with Taiwan and had made multiple trips to China. Sources indicated that the Eastern District of New York’s federal prosecutors are investigating her communications with foreign entities during her time in office, with the FBI having searched her residence earlier this year. Notably, the district attorney announced charges against another former high-ranking Asian American advisor, Sun Wen, for allegedly acting as an agent for China.

When asked about the legal challenges he faces, Adams pointed out that crime rates are declining and new construction projects are progressing. He emphasized that he remains focused on his responsibilities as mayor, insisting that the ongoing federal investigation has not distracted him or his team from effectively managing the city, even amidst resignations of several key officials.
