Two suspects, Francisco Corocoj, 25, and Manuel Perez, 49, are facing murder charges after a tragic incident in a supermarket parking lot near 8th Avenue in Brooklyn, where two homeless men were violently attacked while they slept. One of the victims, identified as 38-year-old Cos Jervis Jonas Ajpuac, succumbed to his injuries on October 2, while a second victim, a 42-year-old man, is in stable condition.
The attack occurred around 7 PM on September 18 at the Shop Rite parking lot located at 1080 McDonald Avenue. According to insiders at the supermarket, both victims were regulars who survived by collecting bottles for cash. They reportedly had a friendly relationship with their attackers, often gathering to drink after collecting bottles together. However, surveillance footage revealed a shocking scene of the suspects beating the men mercilessly.
Residents along 8th Avenue expressed concern over the growing violence against homeless individuals. One local, Miss Lin, highlighted that similar attacks have occurred in nearby Sunset Park, stating that it is a troubling reality, though she was not surprised by this incident. “While the attackers are brutal, such events are not uncommon. We face an overarching issue in our community regarding hostility towards the homeless. Regardless, attacking another life is unacceptable. Homeless individuals should not have to endure such violence,” she remarked.
Some community members speculate that the attack may have stemmed from a personal conflict between the parties involved. “Typically, people don’t attack others without reason; they’d be aware of the legal consequences,” one local suggested. The police quickly identified the suspects following the incident, and they appeared in court on October 12, facing charges of intentional murder, intentional injury, and illegal possession of weapons. Investigations continue as authorities seek to uncover the motives behind this brutal act.
