On October 14, in Beijing, Xiao Jie, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, attended the opening ceremony of the 2024 Global National Assessment Capacity Conference and delivered a keynote speech.
During his address, Xiao emphasized that China views public policy evaluation as a crucial tool for advancing the modernization of its national governance system and governance capabilities. He noted that the country has been continuously strengthening conceptual guidance and institutional construction, making strides in evaluation practice, and is on its way to establishing a public policy evaluation framework with Chinese characteristics. He expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with other nations under the framework of global development initiatives, aiming to create assessment systems tailored to the unique circumstances of each country, enhance capacity building, improve quality and effectiveness, and foster international cooperation, thereby supporting global development efforts.
Xiao also had a meeting with Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, and collectively met with high-ranking representatives from other attending countries.
The conference is jointly organized by China’s National International Development Cooperation Agency and the United Nations Development Programme, centered around the theme: “Responsive Evaluation: Supporting Government Decision-Making, Promoting Inclusiveness and Harmony, and Leading Future Development.”
